Interesting idea for a plot -- it seems pretty accurate, qualitatively. Nice job.
If the fractions represent the fraction of time that the population spends at those activities, then the "gym" slice might go up again in the higher years. I'm nearing my 40th, and my "trad" slice has gone way down from my 1st (where it was 100%) as my "gym" goes way up. I'll never reach the "badasses" column, unfortunately.
Jon, I'm glad you appreciated my sketched circles. Originally, I was thinking the fractions represent the proportions of the population who made each genre their main focus, and I meant the "first year climbers" to represent the climbers of right now--I know the climbers of 20+ years ago rarely started out in gyms since they simply didn't exist. I'd like to disagree with you on one thing: After 50 years of climbing, I'd certainly consider you a badass. And it sounds like you're nearly there.
Thanks Liz. Yes, something can be said for just surviving 40 years of climbing. In that view, still cranking after 50+ years of self-inflicted punishment would be pretty "bad".
Also, your intended interpretation of the charts is indeed the natural way to view them -- I was just taking my usual contrary view...
